My advice for most dedicated servers would be this: go for the one that has the most RAM. Then only try to compare processors. RAM is much more important than you'd think for servers, especially if you have database driven apps.

Cisco's TechTV to air Data Center Efficiency Episode

Tue, 19 Aug 2008 09:19:00 -0500

(Note: If you want to skip what I say and go right to the sign-up page, here's your link)

Otherwise, fasten your fun-belts!

Cisco's TechWise TV is set to "air" an episode called "Energy Efficiency in the Data Center," this Thursday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, which ought to be enough of a reason for a blog post.

It took a little bit of digging for me to figure out exactly what TechWise TV is, and apparently I'm a little bit behind on the subject, because it's been running since September of 2006.

It's a TV-show style web broadcast produced by Cisco and covering a range of technology topics. Most of the time it deals with Cisco products, but apparently not always.

I think I was tipped off about this particular episode because it's especially relevant to the hosting community. Anyone who reads the WHIR regularly knows we've put a lot of energy into covering green technology and its place in the data center - with our "green issue" of WHIR magazine, among other things.

Cisco is keen to get its energy efficiency message to hosting providers, which could be good news for hosting providers, depending on how effective that message is.

There's a lot of information on offer from the company regarding energy efficiency, and part of the episode is given over to a discussion of the company's efficiency assurance program, which includes planning and assessment tools for determining the efficiency of your facilities, as well as a ton of video content relating to efficient data center design. There's a lot of material on this section of the company's website, but check the "access interactive tool" link in the far right column of the page to pull up most of it.

There's a trailer for the episode hosted on YouTube. It's short, but it gives you a sense of what to expect from the episode.

In particular, the episode (I've previewed a good chunk, but haven't had time yet to watch the entire thing) discusses the fact that energy efficiency is a goal in IT operations not simply for altruistic reasons, but for the sake of its bottom-line impact. We've discussed this before - server power and cooling together make up most of the ongoing cost of operating a data center. And employing more efficient technology can reduce that cost considerably.

The program covers some key steps that data center operators can take to increase the efficiency in their businesses immediately without an overwhelming amount of investment - virtualization (in the network, in the storage area and of course on the server) being a key element in efficiency.

Overall, it's good advice, but nothing you haven't already heard if you're attuned to the problems of energy efficiency you face as data center operators. The real value in the episode has to do with some of the specific solutions (from Cisco, and from a variety of other companies) that are addressed. Might give you something to think about.

Of course, nothing is specifically for sale at this point. It's a free presentation. And along with the "live" airing next Thursday morning, there will be experts on hand answering user submitted questions via the website.

You can sign up for the session by visiting this link.

" Just a quick review of BlueHost. I think for the price you pay that they are
really good for hosting. Customer service is always willing to try and help
where ever they can and even beyond what they say they will do (which I have to
tell you means a lot more than "sorry we don't give that support") From what I
have experience with them over the last year has been So much better than some
other web hosts out there. Give it a go - I think they are great. "

Web hosting provider The Planet announced on Monday it has enhanced the commission structure of its affiliate program, in response to the program's significant success.

Lastly you want to ask yourself questions once you get the reply. Did it answer your questions thoroughly? Are you satisfied with the response? These together might be even more important than the answers themselves. A sales team who goes above and beyond the normal yes/no type answers is a good find. If the host does give you customer to contact then you should make sure you do contact them regardless if you desire to host with the company or not.

Virtual Servers - They're Not Just Figments of Your Imagination

Mon, 18 Aug 2008 15:02:58 GMT
A virtual server looks and acts like a regular server, but without its own hardware. Instead it shares all physical resources with other virtual servers on a physical host.

Radix has developed various sort of applications based on Microsoft.NET Platform, catering different sorts of requirements.

Some of the key areas of expertise include:

For the hostican speed test and hostican server response time, it was recorded as 0.257second over the march 2008.

Thats a good addon service, and you should select hostican hosting as your next ecommerce web hosting.

phpbb have always fascinated me. This is the initiative I needed in getting this article written on phpbb, to let this fascination fascinate others.

More PHP Projects to require PHP5

Well, my first official review. In this review I will be covering a brief
outline of the hosting website, hostican.

Ill start things off by simply saying, wow. In these first few days, I could
not be more pleased. I switched from using the hosting company HostMonster.com.
Let me confidently say that I made the right switch.

First things first, service. I had to call HostMonster about 2 times initially
when I joined them. What a pain! There was a line every time I needed to talk to
a representative, and Ill add that their Hold music is just plain awful. When
I switched to hostican, I called them up, bam, talking with a person
immediately. No waits, no ear-ripping music, nothing except good ol people to
talk to. Not to mention their demeanor and manners. I must say, my experience
with their service has up to this point been absolutely seamless.

Now lets move on to hosting. The best thing about their hosting, in my eyes, is
the simplicity of their two different plans. They are both relatively
inexpensive, come loaded with lots of useful features, and have some great
resources available. The base plan comes with 200GB of disk space, 2 domain
names, one FREE domain, 2,500GB of monthly bandwidth, along with being
e-commerce enabled. Impressive. Remember, that is just the basic plan, only
$6.95 per month.

Now I will admit I havent had a whole lot of time to mess around with the
control panel, however they do offer a demo control panel for anyone interested
in looking at that, just go to their site. Now there was one feature that
ultimately switched me to hostican - Wordpress. Im sure there are lots of other
dedicated hosts that offer wordpress, but hostican made it so simple, it was
absolutely unbelievable. You just go onto control panel, click install
wordpress, and bam, there you go. Dont forget that hostican also provides tons
of free video tutorials on everything from setting up email addresses to
managing files in control panel. I however will only be using the WordPress
features, so the rest of the control panel is up to you to test.

The last thing I will write about for now that really grabbed my attention was
their affiliate program. It is quite amazing I must say. Its free to setup, you
dont even have to have a domain hosted with them to make an account. Basically,
they pay you X amount of dollars per person that signs up using your unique
link. The rates are $70 for the first 4 people you get and $90 for everyone
after that (This resets every month). Also, you can get higher rates if you are
able to refer over 10 people every month. Talk about big money! I signed up for
this right away, and I have their advertisement in my top header that goes to my
unique link. If you sign up under that, you help me and you dont have to pay
extra fees, hidden fees, nothing like that. So if you are in need of a host and
are in a giving mood, feel free to click that Ad up in the top header for
hostican.com.

Well, thats my very simple and basic review. My overall impressions of hostican
are perfect. Up till now things have been smooth, simple, easy, fast,
everything. I would definitely recommend their services to you, and remember,
click my affiliate link to help me out! Overall 10/10, excellent hosting
company.

Web hosting is a very legitimate need for most individuals and businesses. Unfortunately it is also an urgent need for hackers and spammers of many kinds. These people will always try to sign up for cheap hosting accounts, especially if there is an x months for free promo. Worse: they will also sign up for more expensive hosting accounts using stolen credit card info!

Could this be a new hacker tool?

On the Wal-Mart-ized Web...

Fri, 16 Mar 2007 17:39:00 -0400

Liam says this week's most important trend is web hosting providers' continued expansion of data center footprints. The strong demand for hosting facilities seems like a good sign. At the same time, there are a number of outside-world developments that folks in the hosting business ought to keep an eye on.

1. On Wednesday, in addition to officially releasing RHEL5, Red Hat announced that it will soon launch an open source marketplace called Red Hat Exchange (RHX). As Business Week reports, Red Hat will guarantee the compatibility of RHX products with its platform AND provide tech support for each and every 3rd party product on the exchange. In addition, RHX will allow end users to submit ratings, read reviews and compare notes.

2. Later that afternoon, Microsoft said it will buy Tellme Networks. The Associated Press thinks the deal is worth $800 million to $1 billion.

3. Less than a day later, Cisco announced that it has agreed to acquire WebEx for $3.2 billion (or $2.9 billion, if you deduct WebEx's $300 million cash balance).

4. And last but not least Google sort of confirmed that it's working on a mobile phone.

It's a Wal-Mart-ized web; every Big Co wants to assemble a broader range of more seamlessly integrated products for a wider and better networked audience. This leaves less and less of a market for old school vendors who sell standalone widgets to isolated prospects.

For instance, consider 1&1's recent survey of 765 small business owners. Andreas says 100% of the respondents agree that the absence of a company website is bad for sales, but there's much more to these customers' operations beyond setting up a web presence. Might they not benefit from Zoho or ThinkFree powered productivity apps? SharePoint based collaboration? CRM?

More importantly, Andreas counts "hundreds of thousands of US small businesses" among his customers. As such, one super valuable feature that he's uniquely positioned to deliver is a 1&1 social network through which customers can connect with potential vendors, partners and buyers. I feel like 1&1 is really missing out by amassing a sizable community without leveraging it for its members' benefit.

As SWSoft CEO Serguei Beloussov likes to point out, 1&1 and its competitors have sold tens of millions of "web hosting 1.0" accounts, which collectively generate billions in annual revenue. He's absolutely right - but as you see above, the world's not standing still...

Featured buy web hosting Items

I've been with hostgator since around August of 2004. I signed up with a
reseller account to use as hosting for both myself and clients. My problems
began about a year ago with them, sometime in February or March of 2005 when one
of my sites was getting too much traffic. Now, I'm no fool. I understand that
shared hosting oversells and anyone who uses too many resources, even if still
within their quota, gets kicked off. What really shocked me, though, was no
warning. Not even emailing me after they had done it. Nothing, nada. I found out
by a member of the site that was suspended, someone I didn't even know, tracking
down my phone number and calling me.

I went to a dedicated server after that, but I kept my hostgator account for the
sites that were already hosted on it - about three client sites, as well as this
site right here.

Two days ago I come to post a blog and hmm, I get the suspended page. That's
weird. I check my email - no notices there. I log into their billing system -
nope, account not past due. What the heck? So I go to their online support chat
and ask them what's going on. I'm informed that I haven't paid my invoice. What
invoice? I have no invoice. I check my bank and I see that I in fact have not
paid them since January. But man, I could've swore I put it on automatic pay.
And hey, if there's no invoice, how can I pay anyway?! Isn't this a problem on
their end? They tell me I need to email sales.

Okay... so I email sales. 12 hours later, they email me back and inform me I
have an invoice, charging me all the way back to October. Uhhh? I KNOW I paid in
January, I have it in my bank statement. I check their billing system, and they
don't even have a backlog of that payment. Something really funky is going on
now. Their system is screwed up, but no matter who I talk to (and oh, I've
talked to everyone) nobody seems to know what's going on. Sales doesn't talk to
support, online support doesn't talk to phone support, so who the hell knows.

Strangely enough, while on the phone with a support guy who informed me I just
need to pay the invoice and then dispute it afterwards, I received an email from
a different support person that my account had been reactivated, and thank you
for the payment. Whaaat? Uh, whatever. At this point I'm just going to take what
I can get and run. Now I at least have backups of all my sites and am moving
them.

It's just astounding how bad a service this has been. I even posted on their
forums about it, in their "Customer Review" section, and it gets MOVED to
another section because I can't post a bad customer review simply because I
haven't paid. HELLO. I WANT TO PAY, JUST NOT MORE THAN I OWE. I NEED AN INVOICE.

Other problems I've had? Well, let's see. About a week ago my sites reverted
back a day and I could get no explanation on why. I had JUST looked at my access
logs the day before, happy about a new site that was already getting hits, and
the next day - logs are back to a day before. Weird. I contact online support
(bad idea, since it's always horrible support) and they have no idea. I guess I
imagined things?

UPDATE 4-20-07: Well, they finally just simply decided to take their bogus bonus
from my credit card that was filed with them, despite the fact that it's
incorrect, I didn't approve of the payment, or anything else. I've never seen
such bad service, support in my life. I can't even be bothered to dispute it
it's just so amazingly horrible.

UPDATE 10-18-07: I'm still with them, why? I don't know - so lazy when it comes
to my own websites. Anyway, so a couple days ago I notice my "main" reseller
account, the site is completely missing. Email is no longer working. I log into
Cpanel to see that it appears my whole site has disappeared. Cute!
